    Information Services

When the health of patients is at stake, information is critical. That's where San Antonio Community Hospital's (SACH's) Information Services (IS) Department comes in. These skilled professionals are at the center of our multi-disciplinary team-oriented work environment, enabling doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administration and support personnel to effectively collaborate with each other.

Our IS team operates and maintains complex hospital-wide computer, network, and telephone technology systems. In addition to responding to the needs of individuals and departments around-the-clock, IS ensures hospital compliance with a multitude of ever-changing regulatory requirements while diligently planning for future healthcare and administrative solutions.

Taking the hospital to the next level of technological advancement in support of better patient care, SACH's IS Department has implemented a new clinical information system. The hospital's Cerner Millennium application coordinates the hospital's core clinical applications.

The Cerner system includes one of the first initiatives is PowerChart, an inpatient electronic health record which includes orders and results reporting, Clinical Practitioner Order Entry (CPOE), Clinical Decision Support, and more. A critical care solution will also be included that will provides clinicians with the ability to view, trend, chart, order, and document all in one place.

Department-specific integrated IS systems will be launched in Health Information Management (HIM), Pharmacy, Radiology, Surgery, and Anesthesia. As SACH moves further to a "paper-lite" electronic medical record environment, document imaging solutions will be implemented in HIM and Business Services.

Phase II of the Cerner Millennium implementation has begun. This work will include rollout of bar code technology to improve caregiver workflow and prevent clinical errors at the bedside. Other projects will involve data warehousing and physician documentation.

Within SACH's IS department, employment opportunities exist for network, UNIX and LAN administration, programming, web development, project management, help desk, and more.

San Antonio Community Hospital's Pharmacy Department is committed to providing safe, evidence-based drug therapies that improve patient outcomes. And while patient acuity continues to increase and new drugs are rapidly brought to market, our pharmacists stay on the leading edge of therapeutic advancements.

SACH's 24/7 pharmacy has implemented a point-of-care order automation system that speeds pharmaceutical therapy to patients while it enhances drug safety and the efficiency of bedside nursing staff. In addition, plans are underway to begin bedside dispensing.

As a vital partner in patient care, our pharmacists participate in medical-staff approved multi-disciplinary rounds where their knowledge and expertise is critical to treating individual patients based on their current and ongoing needs. And, our pharmacy techs work alongside our pharmacists to get needed medications to our patients in a timely manner.

San Antonio Community Hospital's Radiology Department is divided into three major areas: Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Radiation Oncology.

Diagnostics is often where patient care begins. And what is learned through diagnostics guide decisions of the healthcare team as they work together to provide healing for each patient. That's why SACH is committed to providing advanced technology in support of diagnostics.

Our state-of-the-art 64-slice CT scanner is considered one of the fastest and most detailed scanners in the world. The 64-slice CT scanner allows physicians to view anatomical structures in greater detail and with more clarity than ever.

We are also the region's first 3T MRI-equipped facility, providing unparalleled digital imaging. The 3T MRI is considered the gold standard in MRI technology. The 3T MRI provides greater clarity and diagnostic abilities because it produces twice the magnetic strength of the conventional 1.5T MRI.

Our latest addition is the Gamma Knife. Our Southern California Regional Gamma Knife Center makes us the first hospital to bring the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion®—the most advanced radiosurgical system available—to the Inland Empire. Gamma Knife is a revolutionary way of conducting noninvasive brain surgery. Gamma Knife is used to treat benign and malignant brain tumors, vascular malformations, and other brain disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia and Parkinson's disease.

    Diagnostic Radiology services offered include:

    • General radiography and fluoroscopy
    • Dexa-scan – bone density (osteoporosis screening)
    • Mammography and stereotactic breast biopsy
    • Diagnostic ultrasonography, including "real-time" linear scanning
    • Portable capabilities including fluoroscopy in surgery
    • Angiography
    • Head and body CT scanning
    • 3T Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and open MRI
    • Gamma knife

SACH's Nuclear Medicine imaging personnel utilize the latest technology for planar and SPECT. These include a triple head whole body scanner, a triple head cardiac scanner, and a multi-purpose single head scanner.

Radiation Oncology at SACH provides traditional radiation therapy and a Gamma Knife Center in conjunction with US Neurosurgical. This is the first gamma knife in the Inland Empire.
