SACH Among the top 5% in Nation

LatestNews_TopFivePercent For the second consecutive year, San Antonio Community Hospital’s emergency medical care has been found to be among the top 5% in the nation according to a new study released by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. As a result, San Antonio Community Hospital (SACH) was presented with the HealthGrades 2011 Emergency Medicine Excellence Award®.

The findings are based on an analysis of more than seven million Medicare patient records from 2007 to 2009, focusing on 12 of the most common and life-threatening medical emergencies. The First Annual HealthGrades Emergency Medicine in American Hospitals® study found that as a group, SACH and the other award recipients had lower mortality rates for the 12 conditions studied. In fact, the study found that patients who were treated at top hospitals for emergency medicine like SACH, had a 40% lower death rate.

“In the case of a medical emergency, patients need to get to the closest emergency room as fast as possible. No exceptions,” said Dr. Rick May, study co-author and HealthGrades Vice President of Clinical Quality Services. “That said, we encourage patients to prepare in advance by identifying top-performing hospitals close to home. Our research shows that it’s not just the care you receive the moment you arrive that makes the difference between life and death, but the hospital’s ability to continue to provide you with the right care if you need to be admitted.”

“Our emergency room staff continues to exceed expectations,” states Kevin Parkes, MD, Medical Director of SACH’s Emergency Department. “We have one of the busiest paramedic receiving centers in San Bernardino County, seeing over 70,000 patients a year. Our medical staff and nursing teams have established protocols that allow us to work together as a well-coordinated team, resulting in outstanding patient care. While many visits start in our emergency room, the entire hospital should be commended for receiving this award again this year.”

“We’re honored to be recognized by HealthGrades for a second time,” states Vince Leist, Interim CEO of SACH. “Our staff is committed to providing the best emergency care we can to area residents. The recognition by HealthGrades, along with our designation as a 100 Top Hospital, is a great accomplishment for our staff who works so hard every day to give their best.”

SACH has just broken ground on a new patient tower and emergency department expansion scheduled to be completed in 2013. The new emergency department will be equipped with the latest technology and 52 treatment beds, allowing the staff to deliver their award-winning emergency care to even more Inland Valley residents.

HealthGrades is recognized as the nation’s leading independent quality ratings organization that objectively evaluates how well hospitals are able to ensure adequate outcomes for their patients. The HealthGrades hospital ratings and awards reflect the track record of patient outcomes at hospitals in the form of mortality and complication rates and these ratings are based on data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of being rated, and no hospital pays to be rated.
